The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development reported that President Azali Assoumani inaugurated a 6.3-megawatt solar power plant in Moroni on April 22 2025. The project received AED 25.7 million equivalent to $7 million from the fund to address rising electricity demand and promote economic expansion in the Union of the Comoros. WAM reported that the installation will deliver renewable power to the capital and surrounding districts while decreasing dependence on imported fuels.

Azali Assoumani praised bilateral ties at the event which included Jumaa Rashed Al Remeithi the UAE ambassador to Comoros and senior officials from both sides. The president stated The UAE has a remarkable record in driving renewable energy advancements and climate action. ADFD’s role in supporting sustainable energy projects is commendable reinforcing global sustainability principles and leveraging innovative technologies to expand access to clean energy.

Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi the director-general of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development described the development as a milestone during the same ceremony. Al Suwaidi said in the statement This solar plant marks a milestone in advancing economic and social development in the Comoros. By investing in renewable energy we contribute to long-term sustainability and environmental responsibility. We remain committed to working closely with our partners to ensure this project delivers lasting benefits for present and future generations.

The solar plant will link to the national grid using medium-voltage lines according to the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development. A World Bank document placed diesel at 91 percent of Comoros electricity mix in 2024 with only 22 megawatts of reliable thermal capacity available against peak loads that frequently exceed supply. International Renewable Energy Agency statistics show solar accounted for the entirety of the country’s 8 percent renewable electricity share in 2023.

The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development noted that its cumulative support to Comoros has reached AED 439.4 million or $119.6 million in concessional loans and grants since operations began there in 1979. Those resources have targeted energy health education and transport projects that underpin broader infrastructure gains. The current solar addition forms one element of ongoing cooperation aimed at expanding reliable power access across the archipelago.

The initiative advances multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals including affordable clean energy climate action and global partnerships the fund stated in its announcement. Similar UAE-backed renewable schemes have appeared elsewhere in Africa including a 16-megawatt solar and storage system completed on Grande Comore by Masdar that reduces diesel consumption through integrated operations. Such efforts align with patterns of Gulf investment that have lifted renewable capacity in markets long reliant on thermal generation.
