The Emirates News Agency reported that the gathering brought together delegates from dozens of member states along with observers from regional and international organisations focused on metrology. Discussions centred on the adoption of the council’s strategy for the 2026-2028 period, updates to technical working groups and progress on action plans designed to strengthen measurement infrastructure. A SMIIC assessment found that such harmonisation helps eliminate technical barriers, with the institute having published 81 OIC/SMIIC standards to date including 21 related to halal products.
Saeed Al Mehairi, executive director of the Emirates Metrology Institute, chaired the sessions in his capacity as head of the Metrology Council. In remarks carried by the Emirates News Agency, Al Mehairi highlighted the UAE’s role in advancing metrology systems that contribute to sustainable development and global competitiveness among participating nations. The meeting also featured presentations on national metrology developments from several countries, allowing participants to share initiatives and identify areas for collaboration.
According to SMIIC figures, the organisation counts more than 45 member states and continues to expand its reach to promote uniformity in metrology, standardisation and accreditation. A SMIIC report noted that these activities directly support intra-OIC trade by building trust in measurements for manufactured goods, food products and services traded across borders. The council’s work plan includes training programmes and joint projects that have engaged over 1,000 participants in recent years.
The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, which oversees the Emirates Metrology Institute, coordinated the event as part of the UAE’s broader commitment to regional quality infrastructure. Data from SMIIC places the number of technical committee meetings held annually in the dozens, with participants addressing topics from legal metrology to specialised measurements for halal compliance. Officials reviewed budgets and established new task forces to carry forward priorities identified during the sessions.
Earlier SMIIC gatherings, including the 16th meeting held in Istanbul in late 2025, laid groundwork for the strategy adopted this week by focusing on halal metrology indices and knowledge platforms. A SMIIC presentation to COMCEC indicated that robust metrology frameworks can boost economic welfare and consumer protection while facilitating smoother cross-border exchanges among member states. The current meeting built on those foundations by approving specific initiatives for the coming cycle.
Representatives from liaison organisations such as the Gulf Association for Metrology attended as guests and contributed insights into ongoing regional cooperation. The Emirates News Agency stated that the sessions reaffirmed commitments to innovation in metrology that align with wider OIC goals for economic integration. Participants concluded by outlining follow-up steps to implement decisions reached during the Abu Dhabi gathering.
