The Dubai Centre for Family Businesses launches Certificate in Board Directorship programme to develop competencies in corporate governance, strategic oversight and family business dynamics, the centre said in an announcement reported by WAM. The curriculum draws on international standards while addressing regional regulatory requirements and succession challenges common to multi-generational enterprises. Participants will gain practical tools for effective board participation through case studies and interactive sessions over the course duration.
A Ministry of Economy and Tourism assessment found that family businesses contribute around 60 percent of the UAE’s GDP, more than 80 percent of employment and nearly 90 percent of private-sector companies. The data places these firms at the centre of the national economy and the We the UAE 2031 vision to double GDP to AED 3 trillion. The new certificate addresses the need for stronger board practices to support continuity across generations.
Established by Decree No. 45 of 2022 under Dubai Chambers, the centre has introduced several training and advisory initiatives since its formation, a Dubai Chambers statement indicated. Previous programmes have focused on next-generation leadership and family business management in partnership with institutions such as the Mohammed bin Rashid Center for Leadership Development. The Board Directorship certificate extends this portfolio by targeting current and aspiring board members from Dubai-headquartered family firms.
The programme aligns with Federal Decree-Law No. 37 of 2022 on Family Businesses that the Ministry of Economy and Tourism introduced as the world’s first comprehensive legislation for the sector. This framework established the Unified Family Business Register and mechanisms for family charters and share structures, ministry figures show. Officials anticipate the training will accelerate uptake of governance best practices among registered entities.
Modules within the certificate cover board finance, effective directorship and conflict resolution tailored to family ownership models, according to the centre’s published outline. Enrolment criteria require participants to hold or be preparing for board-level responsibilities within qualifying Dubai family businesses. Completion grants a formal credential designed to elevate professional standards across the emirate’s family enterprise community.
Further enrolment information and detailed curriculum schedules are available via the Dubai Chambers platform, the centre confirmed. The launch forms part of ongoing efforts to reinforce Dubai’s position as a hub for sustainable family business practices through structured education and policy alignment.
