Doha Bank said in a statement that MSCI completed the assessment this month and moved the Qatari lender into the BBB category from its prior BB level. The upgrade recognises steps the bank has taken to embed sustainability across lending decisions, operational practices and reporting frameworks. Doha Bank first outlined a dedicated sustainable finance framework in recent years, an approach that Sustainalytics evaluated positively in May 2023 according to the bank’s published disclosures.
The bank’s sustainability reporting has expanded significantly since 2016 to cover all parameters required by the Qatar Stock Exchange ESG methodology in addition to selected GRI standards, Doha Bank figures show. It achieved a perfect 100 percent score on the QSE Sustainable Stock Exchanges initiative every year from 2018 through 2025. These disclosures help investors gauge how the institution manages risks ranging from climate exposure in its project finance book to diversity metrics in its workforce.
MSCI ESG ratings evaluate a company’s resilience to material long-term environmental, social and governance risks relative to industry peers, according to methodology published by the ratings provider. A BBB score places a company in the average performance band, an improvement that signals better alignment with global expectations on issues such as carbon transition planning and board oversight. Doha Bank noted the rating change will support its efforts to attract capital from ESG-focused investors active in the Gulf market.
In parallel with the MSCI review, Doha Bank maintains an ESG risk rating of 22.0 from Morningstar Sustainalytics as of January 2026, which also classifies the institution as medium risk of material financial impacts from ESG factors. The bank has issued sustainable bonds and integrated environmental criteria into credit assessments, moves that align with Qatar National Vision 2030 priorities for economic diversification and environmental stewardship. Industry data from similar Qatari institutions indicate that several peers have reached A or higher ratings in recent MSCI reviews, setting a competitive benchmark for the sector.
Doha Bank, established in 1979, operates across retail, corporate, wholesale and international banking segments with a growing emphasis on digital services and responsible financing. The institution holds credit ratings of A from Fitch and A3 from Moody’s with stable outlooks, figures that complement its ESG profile by signalling overall financial stability. Executives at the bank have repeatedly stated that sustainability forms a core pillar of the Himma transformation strategy aimed at long-term value creation.
The upgrade arrives as regional banks face heightened scrutiny on financed emissions and social inclusion metrics, according to assessments published by multilateral organisations active in the Gulf. Doha Bank has responded by launching green financing products and strengthening governance around climate-related disclosures. Further improvements in data collection and target setting could support additional rating gains in future MSCI reviews, the bank indicated in accompanying materials.
