Qatar University secured the Academic Excellence Award in Artificial Intelligence and Scientific Research during the Google Cloud Summit 2026 in recognition of its work accelerating the adoption of modern technologies across education, research and institutional operations. The award, presented on September 23, reflects the university’s success in embedding generative artificial intelligence tools into daily academic and administrative functions while advancing knowledge-based solutions aligned with national priorities. Qatar News Agency reported that the recognition builds directly on a strategic partnership with Google Cloud that has equipped faculty, staff and students with enhanced computational resources.

The partnership has centred on deployment of the Gemini Enterprise platform to deliver generative AI capabilities throughout the university community together with the Spark Innovation Centre that supplies researchers with advanced computing infrastructure for developing and testing artificial intelligence models in strategically important fields. Qatar University first formalised its collaboration with Google Cloud in December 2025, according to statements released at the time, enabling rapid scaling of AI applications that support both teaching and high-level scientific inquiry. This infrastructure has allowed the institution to move beyond pilot projects into systematic integration that improves research output and operational efficiency across multiple colleges.

Qatar News Agency quoted university president Dr Omar Al-Ansari as stating that the award embodies the university’s commitment to translating technological development into tangible impact that serves the academic and research environment. Al-Ansari added that cooperation with Google Cloud contributes to expanding researchers’ capabilities and providing knowledge-based solutions that respond to national priorities while building the capacities required for the future. The president’s remarks underscored how the award validates years of deliberate investment in digital infrastructure that directly supports Qatar’s broader development objectives.

Google Cloud regional general manager for Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and Iraq Ghassan Kosta told the summit that Qatar University establishes a regional model by combining operational efficiency gains with excellence in specialised scientific research. Kosta noted that this approach strengthens Qatar’s position as a global centre for innovation through practical application of advanced AI systems. His assessment highlighted the university’s dual focus on institutional productivity and cutting-edge investigation as a benchmark for other regional academic institutions.

Through these initiatives Qatar University continues preparing future cadres and supporting the knowledge-based economy in ways that fulfil the aspirations of Qatar National Vision 2030, the news agency added. The Spark centre in particular has enabled applied research projects in sectors critical to economic diversification while Gemini Enterprise has streamlined administrative processes that once consumed significant faculty time. Officials indicated that the award will encourage further expansion of AI-driven programmes that link academic discovery more closely with industry and government needs.
