The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority said in a statement that it saved AED 40 million over seven years by re-engineering its major gas turbine inspection and maintenance processes.[[1]](https://www.zawya.com/en/press-release/government-news/dewa-saves-aed-40mln-by-re-engineering-gas-turbine-maintenance-465388) The project saved 229 workdays compared to business as usual while reducing outage durations, boosting unit availability and optimising resources. DEWA achieved a global benchmark with a Seven-Star Rating through the initiative, which used an integrated approach with Siemens Energy to optimise sequencing, team coordination, resource management and data analytics.

According to the statement, these efforts have significantly shortened outage durations and enhanced generation capabilities. In one notable instance in 2022, DEWA completed a major overhaul in nine days compared with 11 days previously, representing an 18 percent improvement, and 84 percent less than the time taken in 2006. The authority has a track record of setting world records in gas turbine maintenance, building on earlier projects with Siemens.

H.E. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and chief executive officer of DEWA, said in the statement, “Through the re-engineering of major gas turbine maintenance processes, we have significantly shortened outage durations, enhanced generation availability and optimised our resources.” He added that the initiative transforms innovation into value while strengthening the resilience and efficiency of the utility’s assets. Nasser Lootah, executive vice president for generation, stated that it enhances availability and reliability, reduces risks and delivers substantial benefits.

DEWA’s annual statistics for 2025 place the utility’s total installed generation capacity at 17,979 MW, of which 3,860 MW comes from clean energy sources.[[2]](https://www.dewa.gov.ae/en/about-us/media-publications/latest-news/2026/2/dubai-electricity-and-water-authority-pjsc) The maintenance savings help support efficient operations across this expansive fleet that meets all of Dubai’s electricity needs. The optimisation contributes to maintaining high performance levels as demand grows.

Previous service operations with Siemens Energy at plants like Jebel Ali have also achieved record times, such as completing extensive work in 29 working days for multiple turbines. DEWA continues to leverage such partnerships to drive efficiency across its generation portfolio. These measures ensure reliable power supply while controlling costs.

The savings were realised across multiple maintenance cycles over the seven-year period. The re-engineering focused on data-driven decision making to streamline every aspect of the maintenance workflow. DEWA’s approach has positioned it as a leader in applying innovative techniques to traditional power plant operations.
