The Media Office of the Government of Dubai reported that the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority secured the 3G Leadership Award 2020 for the government sector while managing director and chief executive HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer received the 3G Personality of the Year 2020 for good governance and sustainability. These victories at the annual event organised by Cambridge IFA in the United Kingdom build on the utility’s established record of international recognition for its operational standards. The awards follow a review process that evaluates adherence to global benchmarks in transparency, accountability and sustainable practices across the government sector.

Al Tayer said that winning these two awards underlines DEWA’s global position as a role model for utilities around the world in terms of good governance. He noted that the authority’s model keeps pace with rapid global changes through four main pillars of trust, accountability, transparency and fair practices while aligning with directives from UAE leadership to place the country at number one globally across all sectors. The executive emphasised that DEWA draws inspiration from the principle that how citizens are served holds greater importance than the volume of service provided.

Al Tayer stated, “This new world achievement is a result of our commitment to achieve the vision of our wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE; His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, for the UAE to be number one globally in all areas.” He added that the authority adheres to guidelines from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development on corporate governance for state-owned enterprises, World Bank standards, British Standards Institution requirements and other international frameworks as it prepares for the next 50 years. Innovative projects have raised the share of clean energy in Dubai’s mix to around 9 percent, surpassing the initial 7 percent target for 2020 under the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050.

The managing director praised the teamwork among DEWA employees who carry out duties according to the highest international practices to support an integrated governance system. He highlighted that a positive and incentivised work environment has contributed significantly to the authority’s global achievements and expressed satisfaction with the latest recognition. Al Tayer reaffirmed DEWA’s dedication to advancing Dubai’s civilised, economic, commercial, architectural and social progress in line with leadership goals.

Waleed Salman, executive vice president of business development and excellence at DEWA, said that top management remains committed to the highest international standards of good governance and full compliance across all operations. He explained that this focus has driven greater efficiency and productivity while enabling regular reviews to match global developments and maintain organisational agility in response to change. Salman noted that the dual awards underscore the authority’s integrated framework for effective governance.

The Media Office statement indicated that DEWA previously claimed the Global Good Governance Excellence in Corporate Governance Award 2019 and the Global Good Governance Best Corporate Governance Reporting Award 2019 from Cambridge IFA. The authority also obtained the World Finance Corporate Governance Award 2018 for the UAE and became the first organisation in the GCC to earn British Governance Standard BSI 13500 certification, which it maintained for three consecutive years through 2019. These repeated successes reflect a sustained emphasis on governance that supports both service delivery and long-term strategic objectives.
