The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority completed construction of an advanced pumping station, water reservoirs and integrated distribution network in the Nahwa enclave of Khorfakkan, according to a statement from the authority. Engineer Saud Abdulaziz, director of SEWA’s Khorfakkan department, said the project constitutes an important addition to the water infrastructure in the region and reflects the authority’s direction towards adopting smart solutions and modern technologies in the management and operation of water facilities. The development equips the station with modern operating and monitoring systems that raise pumping efficiency, track operational performance and improve control over water quantities and pressures in line with distribution network needs.

This infrastructure upgrade increases storage capacity, ensures continuity of supply and bolsters the system’s ability to handle demand fluctuations, the authority reported. SEWA simultaneously connected electricity and water services to the heritage village development project in Nahwa, installing a 1,500 kVA substation and extending 1,600 metres of 11 kV cables for power alongside a 500-metre water network to serve the site and its facilities. The work aligns with directives to provide reliable services across all Sharjah regions including remote and mountainous areas.

SEWA’s Nahwa project forms part of a larger AED 4 billion programme to upgrade the emirate’s water networks through 245 kilometres of new pipelines, three pumping stations and nine reservoirs with total storage of 180 million gallons, an AGBI assessment found. That programme, scheduled for completion by the third quarter of 2027, addresses rising demand driven by population growth and economic expansion across Sharjah. In the first quarter of 2026 the authority finished more than 70 kilometres of water network expansions and upgrades, including 30.5 kilometres in Al Saja’a Industrial Area and 20 kilometres of replacements in Al Nasserya using durable Glass Reinforced Epoxy pipes.

Additional Khorfakkan initiatives include two new reservoirs at the SEWA 1 and SEWA 2 pumping stations, each holding 2 million gallons at a combined cost of AED 28.23 million, according to the authority. These reservoirs are set to become operational by the end of 2026, doubling storage capacity at both sites and improving resilience against peak demand periods. The developments build on earlier SEWA work such as a April 2026 connection in Kalba that added 3 million gallons per day and raised local distribution capacity by 50 percent to 9 million gallons daily.

Engineer Faisal Al Sarkal, head of SEWA’s water department, noted that such projects support the vision of Sharjah’s ruler to guarantee sustainable water supplies and higher service standards throughout the emirate. The Nahwa works specifically tackle the area’s unique environmental conditions while preparing for continued urban and tourism-related growth. SEWA data places these targeted investments within a sustained effort to modernise infrastructure and optimise resource use across all its operating regions.
