The Sharjah Electricity Water and Gas Authority completed scheduled maintenance on 138 33kV substations in the first half of 2026 as part of its annual preventive programme. SEWA also reviewed and approved 367 engineering plans for new substation projects and electricity network development during the same period according to its technical standards. The authority completed 25 technical studies for new consumers and nine studies related to the electricity transmission network a SEWA statement distributed via official channels indicated.

Engineer Hamad Al Teneiji the Director of the Energy Transmission Department at SEWA said these works form part of the authority’s efforts to enhance the reliability of the electricity network and improve the efficiency of power transmission substations in line with best practices in operation and maintenance. He added that the authority is reviewing electrical installations while carrying out maintenance work and continuous monitoring of all substations and networks. Al Teneiji noted that such programmes help sustain service quality across the emirate’s growing urban and industrial areas.

Engineer Abdullah Al Kous the Deputy Director of the Energy Transmission Department at SEWA stated that the authority’s plan includes the maintenance of 218 power transmission and distribution substations. He noted that a significant part of the plan has already been completed while work is continuing on the remaining substations in accordance with the approved schedule and the highest safety and quality standards. Al Kous emphasised that SEWA prioritises routine preventive maintenance and uses high-quality genuine spare parts to keep equipment running efficiently.

This maintenance drive builds on SEWA’s 2025 programme which covered more than 200 transmission and distribution stations according to an earlier authority announcement. That effort included upgrading protection systems by replacing 45 relays with advanced models renewing transformer oil in 23 units and conducting safety inspections on 45 transformers operating at 132kV a Zawya report citing SEWA figures detailed. Officials commissioned a 220kV dynamic transformer at the Al Tai station during that cycle to improve voltage quality and network stability.

SEWA operates under directives from Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi the Ruler of Sharjah to expand capacity and meet rising demand across residential industrial and commercial sectors. The authority inaugurated an expansion at the Layyah power and water desalination plant in 2023 that added 1026 megawatts of capacity at a total cost of 2.1 billion dirhams according to a SEWA announcement. Such investments have supported the emirate’s electricity infrastructure which includes multiple generation stations and extensive transmission networks the authority’s official site shows.

The latest substation work aligns with SEWA’s broader strategy to strengthen grid resilience amid urban development and economic growth in Sharjah. Al Teneiji highlighted that the authority continues to implement projects in compliance with the highest engineering specifications and safety requirements. These measures ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to support the emirate’s expanding population and industries a SEWA assessment found.
