The National Financial Regulatory Administration released its latest statistics on August 14 detailing conditions across the financial sector. Outstanding inclusive loans to small and micro enterprises stood at 38.9 trillion yuan, or about 5.73 trillion U.S. dollars, by the end of June. This marked an 8 percent increase from the level recorded a year earlier. The administration’s figures also placed outstanding inclusive loans related to agriculture at 15 trillion yuan, reflecting 7.5 percent year-on-year growth.
China’s banking institutions held 498 trillion yuan in renminbi and foreign-currency assets at the end of the second quarter, the National Financial Regulatory Administration reported. That total represented a 6.6 percent rise from the same point in the previous year. Total assets of insurance companies and insurance asset management companies reached 43.9 trillion yuan, up 6.2 percent from the beginning of the year, according to the same data release.
Commercial banks maintained strong risk buffers at the end of June, the regulator’s assessment found. Their provision coverage ratio stood at 202.87 percent. The capital adequacy ratio of commercial banks, excluding branches of foreign banks, stood at 15.26 percent.
Small and micro businesses remain central to the Chinese economy. A Pekingnology analysis published in February 2025 indicated these enterprises drive employment for about 400 million people. Separate research from industry assessments has placed their contribution above 60 percent of gross domestic product while accounting for roughly 79 percent of job positions across the country.
Policy measures have focused on expanding financing access for smaller firms in recent years, building on earlier targets for loan growth. The National Financial Regulatory Administration has tracked inclusive lending, typically defined as credit extended to businesses with a single credit line of 10 million yuan or less. Such support aligns with broader efforts to sustain employment and innovation in the sector.
The latest quarterly data arrives as Chinese authorities continue to monitor overall financial stability amid evolving economic conditions. Banking sector assets have grown steadily, according to repeated releases from the regulator over the past year. Insurance-sector expansion has similarly reflected rising demand for risk-management products.
