The National Planning Council attributed the overall monthly increase primarily to the mining and quarrying sector that accounts for 86.46 percent of the index weighting. Its PPI rose 2.96 percent in May 2026 from the previous month due to a 2.97 percent advance in crude petroleum and natural gas prices with other mining and quarrying holding steady. The sector posted an 11.27 percent gain compared with May 2025 mainly from an 11.29 percent rise in crude petroleum and natural gas.

Manufacturing which represents 15.85 percent of the index saw a 2.71 percent month-on-month increase in May 2026 according to the National Planning Council. The rise came from higher prices in basic metals by 8.74 percent chemicals and chemical products by 5.66 percent beverages by 1.87 percent cement and other non-metallic mineral products by 1.22 percent food products by 0.88 percent and rubber and plastics products by 0.49 percent. Offsetting declines included refined petroleum products falling 13.96 percent and printing and reproduction of recorded media dropping 4 percent.

On a year-on-year basis manufacturing prices jumped 32.31 percent in May 2026 the National Planning Council figures show. Chemicals and chemical products surged 53.83 percent while basic metals increased 26.13 percent and food products rose 3.89 percent. Declines were registered in refined petroleum products by 7.98 percent rubber and plastics products by 1.64 percent and beverages by 0.48 percent.

The electricity gas steam and air conditioning supply sector experienced a 9.85 percent decline in its PPI during May 2026 compared with April the council reported. This sector however recorded a 3.95 percent increase from May 2025. Water supply posted a 1.71 percent monthly decrease and a 7.05 percent annual decline according to the same data.

The producer price index measures average changes in prices received by domestic producers for their output the National Planning Council has explained in its releases. The council issues the PPI monthly with data drawn from key industrial activities including mining manufacturing electricity and water. Earlier reports from the body showed the index decreasing 14.9 percent in January 2026 before climbing 5.33 percent in February.
