Emirates News Agency reported that the US dollar was little changed in Friday trading but stayed on track for a weekly loss as markets tracked global geopolitical and economic developments. The agency placed the dollar’s gain at 0.18 percent against the Japanese yen to 160.225 yen while sterling held unchanged at $1.34145. The US Dollar Index measuring the greenback against a basket of major currencies remained steady at 99.75 after slipping to a one-week low in the prior session.
In cryptocurrency markets Emirates News Agency reported that Bitcoin rose 0.4 percent to $63,595 while Ethereum fell 0.29 percent to $1,666 with the sector overall showing declines. The agency highlighted how such moves reflected investor caution during the period. Similar cryptocurrency weakness has appeared in prior episodes of dollar strength.
The latest currency figures follow a period in which the dollar started 2026 on softer footing. Edward Jones data placed the U.S. Dollar Index decline at about 9.5 percent through 2025. The firm noted that while talk of the dollar’s demise remains exaggerated its multi-year uptrend has lost momentum with currency volatility rising.
Reuters reported in April 2026 that the dollar rose on renewed geopolitical concerns with the index climbing 0.46 percent to 100.02. The euro dropped 0.45 percent to $1.1536 and sterling fell 0.63 percent to $1.3222 in that session. Bitcoin declined 1.69 percent to $67,023.77 while Ethereum fell 3.98 percent to $2,058.25 at the time.
An Atlantic Council assessment from February 2026 found that the dollar fell another 1.2 percent in January of that year after a 10 percent decline over the prior 12 months. The council observed that the greenback had risen roughly 40 percent between 2010 and 2024 making the recent moves a potential correction toward historical averages. The assessment warned that a sharper decline could raise risks for US markets and the broader economy.
Currency strategists have pointed to the yen’s position near 160 as a level that has historically drawn attention from Japanese authorities concerned about excessive weakness. The pair reached 160.225 in the session covered by Emirates News Agency. Such dynamics add to the range of factors influencing trading decisions across currency and digital asset markets.
