The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation and the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety brought together senior leaders and technical experts for four days of discussions that covered regulatory approaches in both countries, a WAM report stated on May 30 2025. Sessions examined the operational status of nuclear power plants in the UAE and South Korea along with initiatives to strengthen inspection programs and safety review mechanisms. FANR detailed advancements in its long-term regulatory planning and workforce development programs aimed at sustaining effective oversight of the nuclear sector.

The two sides reviewed FANR’s research and development activities and considered methods to expand information sharing between the organizations, according to the Emirates News Agency. They also identified prospects for joint training efforts and collaborative research that could advance capabilities on both sides. A WAM report noted that the meeting built upon cooperation first established by FANR with South Korean entities in 2010 to develop regulatory expertise.

Discussions gave special attention to opportunities for applying artificial intelligence technologies to nuclear safety processes, the WAM report indicated. Participants assessed how such tools could support regulatory functions while maintaining stringent safety standards across operations. The dialogue reflected FANR’s ongoing integration of advanced technologies into its oversight framework.

FANR has since developed its Intelligent Operational Nuclear Safety system in partnership with the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, an initiative that earned the 2026 Innovation Award in the Artificial Intelligence category from the International Network on Innovation to Support Operating Nuclear Power Plants established by the International Atomic Energy Agency, Gulf News reported in September 2026. The IONS platform uses artificial intelligence to monitor climate-related risks at facilities including the Barakah nuclear power plant and to model future environmental conditions. This recognition followed the May 2025 technical meeting and highlighted the regulator’s focus on technology-driven safety enhancements.

The Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety contributed perspectives drawn from its regulatory experience during the Abu Dhabi sessions, the original WAM report detailed. Both parties agreed to pursue further cooperation in areas that include emerging technologies and personnel development. FANR continues to engage international counterparts to refine its regulatory practices for the nuclear industry.
