The Qatar News Agency reported that Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud Al Thani, governor of the Qatar Central Bank and chairman of the Qatar Investment Authority, met with Shaik Abdul Rasheed Abdul Ghaffour, governor of the Central Bank of Malaysia. A separate meeting took place with Iqbal Khan, co-president for global wealth management at UBS and president of UBS Asia Pacific. Both discussions addressed the latest developments in global finance and investment. The Qatar News Agency stated the meetings occurred on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group annual meetings held in Bangkok from October 12 to 18.

The Qatar News Agency indicated the conversation with the Malaysian governor included review of financial sector ties between the two countries. Bloomberg reported on October 15 that Shaik Abdul Rasheed Abdul Ghaffour told interviewers on the meeting sidelines that Malaysia’s central bank maintains vigilance on price increases linked to energy costs. The Malaysian governor added that the central bank holds space to adjust policy if pressures intensify. The Qatar News Agency noted these Bangkok gatherings facilitate alignment on such monetary matters.

According to the Qatar News Agency, the session with the UBS executive followed a similar meeting between Sheikh Bandar and Iqbal Khan in May. The Peninsula Qatar reported in May that the earlier discussion had covered global finance trends and investment flows. UBS operates a substantial wealth management business across Asia and the Middle East. The Qatar News Agency said the latest exchange permitted further assessment of prevailing market conditions.

The Qatar News Agency reported that Sheikh Bandar participated in additional sessions at the same annual meetings, including a joint gathering of GCC central bank governors with representatives of the People’s Bank of China. Decisions on multiple agenda items resulted from that GCC meeting. The QCB governor holds the role of alternate governor for Qatar at the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group. The Qatar News Agency described the overall schedule as part of routine high-level coordination during the annual forum.

Qatar Central Bank information lists Sheikh Bandar as a member of the GCC Central Banks Governors Committee. He assumed the QCB governorship in November 2021 after prior service in investment and oversight roles at the institution. The governor also chairs the National Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Committee. Such international engagements form a regular element of the central bank’s external activities according to QCB records.
