Moonshot AI announced the launch of its new model on Friday, with the Beijing startup positioning Kimi K3 as the world’s first open-source system of its size featuring approximately 2.8 trillion parameters, according to a Gulf Times report. The release prompted immediate attention after the model topped a coding leaderboard maintained by the Arena platform from UC Berkeley researchers, drawing reactions that recalled a similar 2025 breakthrough by another Chinese developer called DeepSeek. Gulf Times noted that industry observers expressed excitement, including University of Pennsylvania professor Ethan Mollick who posted on X that “Kimi K3 seems really good, closest to the frontier yet” even while cautioning that it “cannot write a good murder mystery (though neither can any other model)”.
VentureBeat reported that Kimi K3 placed among the top three models across six coding benchmarks while leading competitors on SWE Marathon and Program Bench.
