The Emirates News Agency reported that Tadweer Group has celebrated construction and safety milestones at the AlBihouth Waste-to-Energy Facility. The integrated waste management company reached five million safe working hours without a single lost time injury reflecting stringent site protocols. Construction has seen substantial progress since early works began in August 2024 including excavation and building of the main waste bunker and boiler house structures. Four large tower cranes are now operational on site as the project moves into electromechanical erection phases.

Tadweer Group is developing the facility in partnership with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company with investors including Marubeni and the Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation. A consortium of ALEC BUTEC and Kanadevia Inova serves as the EPC contractor for the plant that will treat 900000 tons of household waste per year. Upon completion the facility is expected to export 80 megawatts of electricity sufficient to meet the annual demand of 35000 households according to project data. The initiative supports Abu Dhabi’s goal to divert 80 percent of waste from landfills by 2031 Ahmed Al Kayyoomi of Tadweer told WAM in a related briefing.

A P&S Intelligence study projected the UAE waste-to-energy market to grow from USD 210.0 million in 2025 to USD 302.9 million by 2032 at a compound annual growth rate of 5.4 percent.
Abu Dhabi is positioned as the fastest-growing emirate in this sector owing to ambitious infrastructure programs. The AlBihouth plant will also deliver an annual carbon emissions reduction of 1.1 million tonnes. Such outcomes align with national sustainability objectives outlined in various government strategies.

Stefan Kipp the executive managing director of the AlBihouth project stated in a project newsletter that the installation of the steam drum weighing over 70 tons represented a significant step in the process erection schedule. He added that the team hosted visitors from an international waste-to-energy conference in November 2025 to showcase progress. The project remains on track for full operations in summer 2027 after a period of commissioning and testing. Ongoing newsletters from the project team continue to update stakeholders on HSE performance and upcoming milestones.

Tadweer has pursued an international expansion as well signing agreements for a similar facility in Australia that would divert 700000 tonnes of waste annually. The group acquired Masdar’s stake in the Sharjah Waste-to-Energy plant in 2025 to strengthen its domestic portfolio alongside partner BEEAH Group. These developments underscore the scaling of waste-to-resource technologies across the region. Grand View Research data summarized by Environment and Energy Leader places the broader GCC waste-to-energy market at USD 1.78 billion in 2024 with growth to USD 2.48 billion by 2033.
