National Bureau of Statistics figures show that retail sales of services grew 4.9 percent in the January-August period while sales of goods rose 1.0 percent. The combined 2.5 percent increase for goods and services highlights varying momentum across consumption categories. Among service categories, sales of communication and information services along with tourism consulting, rental services and cultural, sports and leisure services posted relatively rapid growth.

The National Bureau of Statistics reported that retail sales of consumer goods totaled 32.76 trillion yuan during the first eight months, an increase of 1.1 percent from the previous year. Urban consumer goods sales reached 28.37 trillion yuan with 1.0 percent growth while rural areas recorded 4.38 trillion yuan in sales, up 2.3 percent. Catering income within consumer goods advanced 2.4 percent to 3.74 trillion yuan in the period.

Online retail sales of goods and services expanded 4.6 percent to 13.48 trillion yuan in the first eight months, National Bureau of Statistics data places the total at that level. Online goods sales alone climbed 4.3 percent to 8.42 trillion yuan with food-related items increasing 15.9 percent, clothing 4.9 percent and daily use goods 1.1 percent. Online service retail sales rose 5.1 percent to 5.06 trillion yuan over the same timeframe.

In August alone, retail sales of consumer goods stood at 3.98 trillion yuan, up 0.4 percent year on year, the National Bureau of Statistics said. Sales excluding automobiles grew 2.5 percent that month while urban areas advanced 0.2 percent and rural regions gained 1.6 percent. The statistics bureau noted these monthly results within the broader eight-month trends.

The agency highlighted that certain service segments drove much of the services-side momentum without releasing exact subsector percentages. Full-year consumer goods sales rose 3.7 percent in 2025 to 50.12 trillion yuan. Online retail sales for the full year of 2025 reached 15.97 trillion yuan with an 8.6 percent increase.
