The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy reported that outbound shipments reached $98.25 billion in August, a substantial rise from the year-earlier period that extended a streak of monthly gains. This performance builds on similar strength seen in July when exports approached $99 billion with growth exceeding 60 percent according to ministry data. Semiconductor products led the advance as memory chip prices rose on the back of AI infrastructure spending worldwide.

A Reuters poll published on August 28 had projected August export growth near 62.6 percent with a trade surplus forecast at $30.74 billion. The actual results exceeded those median expectations from 10 economists surveyed. Park Sang-hyun, an economist at iM Investment and Securities, said IT exports, particularly semiconductors, are expected to sustain high export growth.

Data from the Korea Customs Service showed semiconductor exports in the first 20 days of August climbed 198.8 percent to $26 billion and accounted for 47.2 percent of total shipments during that period. Exports to China increased more than 96 percent in recent readings while those to the United States rose 69 percent on AI data center demand. Shipments to ASEAN nations and the European Union also reached record levels for the corresponding period.

The ministry’s figures placed July imports at $68.56 billion, up 26.5 percent on higher energy purchases, yet the trade surplus still exceeded $30 billion for a second consecutive month. August preliminary customs data indicated a similar pattern with imports rising but exports outpacing them by a wide margin. This surplus has helped offset some domestic economic pressures from global trade uncertainties.

South Korea’s cumulative exports from January through mid-August stood at more than $616 billion, a 50.3 percent increase from the prior year according to customs tallies. The sustained performance has raised expectations that full-year exports could surpass $1 trillion for the first time. Major firms including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have benefited from higher orders for high-bandwidth memory used in AI servers.

Analysts project the regional semiconductor market to maintain momentum even as year-over-year growth rates moderate due to base effects from prior strong periods. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy highlighted that auto exports also posted gains in recent months on electric and hybrid vehicle demand. Additional breakdowns on specific import categories and regional performance will be released in follow-up ministry reports.
