The Global Autism Advocacy Coalition has expanded its membership and outlined multiple initiatives focused on closing gaps in autism diagnosis, policy, investment, technology development and lifelong care, according to a statement from the organization. New partners include the Education Above All Foundation, Kazakhstan’s Bulat Utemuratov Foundation and the Autism Impact Fund, a venture capital vehicle that has backed 20 portfolio companies with two successful exits. Qatar’s engagement with the coalition aligns its work with national priorities, with the Ministry of Social Development and Family overseeing broader inclusion efforts and the Ministry of Public Health managing health aspects such as early screening, diagnosis and clinical services. The coalition has adopted a regional hub model in which Qatar Foundation coordinates activity across the Middle East and North Africa while Autism Speaks leads in North America and serves as the secretariat. Flagship projects now in development encompass a global autism index, a shared data platform, a technology laboratory to create affordable innovations, a governance structure that incorporates input from people with lived experience and programs to strengthen care systems together with the necessary workforce for full-lifespan services. These components aim to foster policy coordination, knowledge sharing, research collaboration and strategic partnerships that generate practical solutions. Her Excellency Buthaina bint Ali al-Jabr al-Nuaimi, Qatar’s Minister of Social Development and Family, said “lasting change through collaboration… platform to accelerate solutions, human rights-based inclusion”. Her counterpart HE Mansoor bin Ebrahim bin Saad al-Mahmoud at the Ministry of Public Health stated that Qatar remains “committed… progress through collective action”. The latest developments continue an 18-year advocacy record led by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, whose 2007 proposal resulted in the United Nations General Assembly’s unanimous adoption of World Autism Awareness Day, now observed each April 2. Qatar itself introduced a national autism strategy in 2017 and followed it with the Qatar Foundation Autism Strategy 2025-2035 to expand inclusive education, leverage artificial intelligence, advance genetic research and streamline healthcare pathways. With the Autism Impact Fund’s participation, the coalition highlights the growing role of targeted investment in developing autism-related technologies and services that can be scaled globally. The World Health Organization has estimated that roughly one in 100 children worldwide falls on the autism spectrum, underscoring the scale of the challenge the alliance seeks to address through coordinated policy, research and community efforts.
