The Panama Canal Authority’s FY2027 budget proposal anticipates total revenue of $5.555 billion for the period from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027. Transit revenues are seen reaching $5.408 billion under the plan approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, reflecting stronger shipping demand. According to details released following the September 1 meeting, the budget represents a solid increase from the figures approved for fiscal 2026.
A direct payment to the Panamanian government of $3.608 billion is projected, along with another $328.5 million in various taxes and contributions. This would bring the total financial support from the canal to the state above $3.9 billion for the year. Net profits are nevertheless expected to dip 4.5 percent to $3.25 billion, the authority’s documentation indicated.
The canal’s economic significance has grown in recent years with fiscal 2025 revenues hitting $5.7 billion, a 14.4 percent jump from the previous 12 months that equated to 6.3 percent of national GDP according to filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Cumulative contributions to the treasury have surpassed $31 billion since the turn of the century. ECLAC data projects Panama’s GDP to expand 4.6 percent in 2027, with canal operations providing a major impetus.
Vessel traffic has shown resilience with a 22 percent increase in transits during the first quarter of the current fiscal year to more than 3,300 crossings. Toll collections similarly rose during the early months, benefiting from rerouted cargoes amid international disruptions. Sub-Administrator Ilya Espino de Marotta has previously signaled that such trends could push annual income beyond initial estimates.
Investment priorities in the new budget include advancing the Río Indio reservoir project to improve water security for the waterway. Additional funding will support expanded training programs and exploration of new business lines such as energy infrastructure. These steps build on the success of the 2016 expansion that has seen larger vessels contribute the majority of current income.
The proposal, under which Panama Canal sees $5.56 billion revenue in FY2027 budget proposal, now awaits consideration by the National Assembly. Officials emphasized the need to balance growth with sustainable management of the canal’s resources. Historical performance shows revenues have more than doubled since fiscal 2020 when the figure stood at $3.4 billion.
