Eurostat reported that the price of fuels and lubricants for personal transport in the European Union climbed 16.9 percent in July 2026 from the same month in 2025. The increase accelerated from the 13.7 percent rise registered in June and came after a 20.7 percent gain in May. The EU statistical office noted that the upward movement affected 25 of the 27 member states while one country recorded a marginal decline.

According to Eurostat data, Romania experienced the steepest annual increase at 24.2 percent. Germany and Lithuania each saw prices rise 22.9 percent, followed by Bulgaria at 22.2 percent, the Netherlands with 22.0 percent and Finland at 20.5 percent. The lowest increases occurred in Sweden with 1.2 percent and Ireland with 3.2 percent, while Hungary was the only member state to register a fall of 0.1 percent.

Eurostat figures show that the annual rate of increase in July exceeded that of June in 13 countries. Yet the July pace proved slower than May’s in 24 member states, a month when four countries posted rises exceeding 30 percent. The statistical office highlighted these shifts in its latest update on harmonised consumer price developments.

On a monthly comparison, EU consumers faced a 4.3 percent rise in diesel prices and a 4.7 percent increase in petrol prices from June to July, Eurostat stated. This reversed the previous month’s trends where diesel had fallen 6.4 percent and petrol edged up only 0.8 percent from April. Diesel prices advanced in 17 countries during the latest period with Poland recording the largest gain at 13.4 percent.

Italy registered a 12.5 percent annual increase in fuel and lubricant prices for July, placing it near the middle of the EU range, according to Eurostat. Portugal saw a 16.7 percent rise, ranking as the 12th highest among member states. The data adds to a series of monthly updates that have tracked sustained pressure on transport costs throughout much of 2026.

In its May 2026 assessment, Eurostat had documented even sharper annual gains with Bulgaria leading at 33.9 percent and several others above 30 percent. The office has consistently used the harmonised index of consumer prices to allow for cross-country comparisons of inflation in this category. Such statistics form a key part of the bloc’s monitoring of household expenditure trends.
