A report by consulting agency Public First cited by Google Korea detailed the international performance of South Korean mobile applications last year with downloads on the Google Play Store climbing to 1.8 billion overall. That figure stood some 2.5 times higher than the 730 million installs recorded inside South Korea underscoring the sector’s widening global reach across diverse content categories. Developers have capitalised on strong user engagement and platform tools to extend their audience well beyond national borders with notable uptake in multiple regional markets.

The same assessment found that global downloads of Korean mobile apps generate US$69 bn in revenues in 2025 with the Google Play Store and Android ecosystem delivering an estimated 98 trillion won in total economic benefits. Those returns supported roughly 460,000 jobs when direct employment at technology firms partner activities and induced consumption were all considered together. The Public First calculations illustrate the sector’s expanding contribution to South Korea’s technology-driven economy over the past year.

Korean app exports have broadened beyond games and webtoons into lifestyle services including photography tools education platforms and fandom applications according to industry tracking. South Korea secured the world’s highest count of active developer accounts as artificial intelligence tools lifted productivity and shortened development cycles for new releases. The productivity surge has allowed local talent to compete more effectively in international markets while maintaining high standards of innovation.

Business of Apps data places total global app downloads across leading stores at approximately 142 billion in 2025 with combined revenues surpassing 166 billion dollars. Apple’s App Store accounted for 117 billion dollars of that total while Google Play contributed 49 billion dollars during the same period. South Korean titles secured a meaningful share of the Android activity helping drive the reported domestic economic impact from the ecosystem.

Google Korea has promoted the sector through initiatives such as the ChangGoo startup program that equips emerging companies with resources to scale and export their products. Participants in the program have achieved higher revenues and broader market penetration the ecosystem review indicated. The combined effect of technological adoption and targeted support has reinforced South Korea’s position as a leading force in the global mobile application landscape.
